eResearch Toolkits

Summary of progress

A decision was made in the second reference group meeting to narrrow the discussion on 'collaboration technologies' towards an exploration of the concept of an eResearch Toolkit, and to consider what that functionality might entail within selected and proto-typical NCRIS investments.

A draft scoping statement was developed (here) in which the following questions emerged:

  • Can we “factor” the collaboration space into different types of systems and needs? What would a list of possible collaboration systems and needs look like? What do we have already?
  • Can these be prioritized? Who would use the systems? Who would host them? Who would be responsible for management issues like high availability, backup, etc
  • What are the requirements for integration between collaboration and AAA? Can common infrastructure support different grades of security (eg. needed in 5.8)
  • What policy/legal/governance issues need to be resolved, What is the investment requirements, investment model, business and sustainability case, etc?
  • What is the cost/benefit for various technologies? Where do we have fundamental technology differences that aren’t easily solved
  • What don’t we know that we need more information on (eg, what types of collaboration suites are needed across the NCRIS areas)?

The presentations and notes from the first meeting are available here.
